It's been more than a half a year since Puss's last CBC. The results are generally good: BUN 56 (I've no idea why it came down); Creatinine 4.2; Phosphorus 5.8. I discuss Phosphorus binders with the vet, and she gives me the go ahead. There's someone who thinks they can get me Basalgel, which is supposedly odorless and tasteless and has been impossible to get lately. We also discuss the pros and cons of using Winstrol V (an anabolic steroid) instead of Cypro as an appetite stimulant. It turns out Winstrol can possibly effect the liver, while Cypro has few effects other than dry mouth (no wonder Puss has been drinking so much water lately!). So we keep Puss on the Cypro, but will experiment with going to every other day. I almost freak when I see her CK, which has always been normal in the 300s, is 1292. CK can indicate muscle damage including damage to the heart! But then I find out that if the stick is difficult (which I already knew it was), you can get an elevated CK. Whew! Puss has gained weight; she now weighs 8.44 lb, which is a pretty good weight for her. I confess about the antibiotics, and the vet has no problem with this. She quotes another vet who says that 90% of cystitis attacks aren't true bacterial infections, and will right themselves without antibiotics. I personally doubt this statistic, although I've heard it before. I know from personal experience even if a culture doesn't grow bacteria, that doesn't necessarily mean you don't have an infection and I know first hand just how painful those infections are. I also have the vet give Puss fluids, something we haven't managed at home in a very long time. We tried back in May again, using a cat sack, using a muzzle, but she would again squirm so much we couldn't get anything into her. She lays completely still at the vets, of course, but I observe what they do. |
