How will I know when it's time?

It's the rare CRF cat who dies in their sleep. I really wanted Cleo to go on her own, but it was not to be. Some people say their cats tell them when it's time to go. I can't say that I really got that feeling from Cleo. One minute she seemed to rally, the next she seemed miserable again.

It's a good idea to think about these things long before it gets to that point. For instance, if your cat stops eating, will you force feed? Will you put in a feeding tube? Do you want to have it done in your home? What do you want to do with the body? It's hard to make these decisions when you're overwhelmed with grief.

I discussed PTS with my vet a week before we actually did it, never dreaming that I'd be doing it in a week. But I wanted to know my options, because I knew our time together was drawing to a close.

Sometimes the best laid plans go awry. I was lucky; Cleo was put to sleep at home, as I wished (and felt she wished). But others aren't so lucky.

For me, it all came down to quality of life. Although Cleo was still fighting, I didn't see her jumping on trash cans to try to get food anymore. She was spending the majority of her time underneath our coffee table, and she just seemed so miserable. The bad times now outweighed the good times, and I couldn't bear to see her suffer any longer.
