Volumes have been written on whether animals — especially cats — should be indoors or outdoors. I’m not really going to get into that today.

However, sometimes I almost feel like a human mom. I can remember my mom scolding us for being inside on a beautiful day. This winter has been extremely mild, and the weather has been just gorgeous (even if we really, really do need some rain).

Our outdoor kennel

As you can see above, we have a large outdoor kennel. While we don’t allow the boys free access to the outdoors, they do have access to this kennel via a cat flap during the day. As you can also see from the photo, it’s a beautiful, warm day.

Gizmo in the carrier

Notice where Gizmo is sleeping. That’s by his choice.
Simba sleeping on the mat

Now notice where Simba’s sleeping.

I find myself often saying to them, “it’s a beatiful day; what are you doing inside?”. Maybe you really do turn into your mother.

The truth is that they spend most of their days inside, by choice. They do spend a lot more time outside during the summer, when it’s really hot. Cats were once desert creatures, after all.
