October 2006
My husband loves to hear about the compliments the guys (as opposed to the boys, which are the cats) get as we’re out & about.
Today I was dropping them off at daycare, as it’s cat rescue day. One of the people in the office was commenting that she thought a certain dog had the cutest tail at the daycare (which is pretty large), but that was until she saw Lola and was reminded of what a cute tail she has.
And it is cute. Everyone comments on it. But cute is as cute does, I say, a la “Forrest Gump”.
Lola is doing very well, especially with the last couple of days of almost none-stop rain — and no accidents! I’m sure there are more accidents in our future, but so far the housetraining is going very well. Although I can’t wait til the day I can trust her in the house like I do Chester, and don’t have to worry about where she is when she’s out of sight!

I’ve been wanting to do this sort of photo for a while. There’s just something about cats’ eyes . . . they’re really mezmerizing. They seem so mysterious . . . and wise. And yes, those are freckles on Simba’s nose. He has them on his gum, too.

Vampire cat

Simba loves to lay in the sun. He’ll get up from a cozy bed in the afternoon to stretch out on the floor in a sunbeam. Except here he’s neatly curled up.
This is the bed you often see Chester & Lola in. It’s gratifying that they all like it, considering it’s the only bed I made (so far).
In fact, I had a “full heart” moment the other night. Chester was laying in the bed — Lola must have been in the crate or curled up with me. Simba got his “must be in bed” look, and reached down to knead it (as in the above photo). Then he simply laid behind Chester, curled around him.
I don’t think it would have happened if I hadn’t been there to keep both of them calm. But it made me extremely happy. Maybe someday they’ll curl up together even if I’m not there. Better yet, maybe someday Chester will curl up with Lola of his own volition!

More vampire cat

Cats really do an amazing job of grooming themselves. They use their paws to help clean their face, which they can’t reach with their tongue.
Lucky for the boys, they have each other; they always groom each other’s face after eating. The other night Simba managed to get some toothpaste (cat toothpaste) stuck in the fur of the back of his head (which my husband thought was the reason Chester was chasing him around), but it was gone by the next day. I don’t know if he managed to remove it, or Gizmo did it for him.

Gizmo has begun to calm down a bit around the dogs. I think it took about 3-4 months with Chester for him to truly begin to relax. At least he hasn’t come into the bedroom in the morning in a while to hiss at them.
In fact, it’s a good thing he hasn’t jumped on the bed in the morning recently, because we’ve begun to let Chester sleep with us.
He has watched their antics from perches such as the scratching post above recently, without hightailing it for safety.
I think we’re probably at Gizmo’s limit for dogs. Or maybe his limit for any additional animals!

Even more Chester & Lola photos

My husband is fond of explaining the gas laws: how things expand to take up the available space — animals do, too. How is it that two little chihuahuas can expand to take up almost an entire bed? Here they’re taking over Daddy’s pillow.

They look so cozy together, don’t they? Lola is perfectly willing to share everything with Chester. Chester, on the other hand, doesn’t want to share anything with Lola. Although sometimes he relunctantly will share beds. And sometimes Mommy & Daddy make him share.

This picture reminds of those photos where they dogs’ heads are really big in relation to their body.

Although this isn’t the greatest photo of Chester, I think it captures Lola’s flirtiness — almost. Everyone loves her tail, and I have to admit it’s very cute. And Lola knows this. And she uses it. She’ll wag that little tail to get attention.

Chester looks tired, doesn’t he? He often does these days. Lola wears him out! It’s hard to believe there’s only two months between them. I don’t know if he’s still just getting his stamina back after his surgery, or he’s really just mellowed out a lot.

Enjoying a breeze.

Both Lola and Chester have an underbite. Chester’s makes him look smirky, and Lola’s makes her look pouty. Although sometimes she looks smirky, too, as in the photo below. It looks as if she’s growling at us to protect her stick, but she’s not.
