Welcome to Gizmo and Simba's clicker training journal. Clicker training is using a small clicker and treats to reinforce good behavior. Clicker training can be used to:

  • Teach cats important things like "come", "up", "down", "crate"
  • Teach cats tricks: "high five", "spinning"
  • Correct behaviorial problems

Gizmo and Simba, not to mention Mommy, are very new to this. We started their training on April 1. They seem to pick up easy things relatively easily, but adding cues definitely takes some time, and they like to present behavior they've already learned, but don't seem to interested in learning new behavior.

They seem to love their training sessions (they love the treats!) and it's a great way to get Simba to move around. They get all excited when they see me moving props into the bedroom (like their carrier, or a catnip mat, or a stool). And when I work with them one on one, the other one will come from anywhere in the house to sit outside the door and cry until it's their turn. Sometimes I work with them together, but that has some built-in challenges.

It's suggested that you keep a clicker log, so I decided to keep one online.

  • April 2002
The boys learn "up", "down", "come", and "sit". They also learn how to jump through a hoop.

  • May 2002
We work extensively on "go to mat", and have them come through their tunnel on cue.

  • July 2002 (we're back!)
The boys learn how to jump over a hurdle. Going to their mats on cue calms them when they have some cat fights.

  • August 2002
Gizmo learns to high five me and sit pretty. Simba learns how to gimme five.

  • September 2002
