A Tale of Two Kittens

We haven't been having quite as many training sessions lately. The weather has gotten very hot, and the boys want to spend their days laying out in the kennel, while Puss is not interested in going out in the heat. Being in Texas, we've got a long, hot summer in front of us — maybe after it's been consistently hot for a while, they'll come to appreciate air conditioning.

I am working hard on "mat" and "come". I find they get bored after about 8 C/Ts. For right now, I put down the mat, C/T when they sit on it, then walk away and C/T if they come when I call. Gizmo gets so excited that he runs after me the minute I walk away from the mat, so I almost don't get to say "come"!

I have also begun to C/T for more stuff around the house: for grooming, which Simba likes and Gizmo doesn't. For clipping nails, which neither one particularly likes. I find for clipping nails I have to get them in the right mood, so I'm hoping that once they associate nail-clipping with C/Ts, they'll be more complacent about it.

I once caught a head-butt from Simba, and gave him a C/T. He was awfully anxious about the next treat, but he couldn't figure out what to do to make it appear.

A few days ago I caught one again — this time I was able to get him to repeat it about five times before he lost interest.
