The Case for Indoors

Most outdoors cats live shorter lives than indoors cats. Feral, or wild cats, often only live four years. Keeping cats indoors helps protect them from:

  • Fights. Cat bites and scratches from fights can often lead to abscesses, which leads to more vet bills.

  • Many diseases, such as heartworm, feline leukemia, rabies, FIV, etc.

  • Being hit by cars.

  • Poisoning, either intentional or accidental. For instance, antifreeze is deadly to animals, but because it has a sweet taste it's also attractive to them.

  • Torture. You may think it would never happen in your neighborhood, but how well do you really know your neighbors and their children? The day I decided to write this, there was a local news item about one family's pet that was tortured and killed.

  • Theft. Unscrupulous people steal cats to sell to researchers.
