A Tale of Two Kittens

The Best of Both Worlds

I have to admit that I always felt something in Puss's and Cleo's lives was missing, since they never got to go outside. I also made the decision that Gizmo and Simba would remain indoor cats. There are things you can do to bring the outdoors in, or even let your cat enjoy the outdoors safely:

  • Build a "cattery", an enclosed area on your lawn or porch. Install a cat door as an entrance, and your cats can enjoy the outdoors at their will. Make sure it's large enough so they can move around, and provide them with several ledges to lay on.

  • Teach your cat to walk on a harness and lead. We've done that with Gizmo and Simba, and they love going for walks around our yard on the weekends.

  • Grow some cat grass indoors. Grass works as a natural laxative for cats, helping to minimize hairballs.

  • Provide plenty of scratching posts. If you can somehow get your hands on a small branch to use as a scratching post, your cats will probably love it.

  • Invest in one of the kitty videos. Some cats are mesmerized by these; others don't even notice them.

  • Because indoors cats typically tend to get less exercise — after all, they're not hunting down dinner — make sure you get plenty of play time with your cats. It'll be fun for both of you, and it will give your cat some much needed exercise.

  • A bird feeder or bird bath near your cat's favorite window will provide hours of entertainment.
